GRWM (Get Ready With Me) is a new (and dare I say sexy!) segment where I'll be interviewing writers retro-style-- cute little questionnaires about what writers are wearing, listening to, snacking on, etc. We want to know what they're into and what gives them the ick. We want writing prompts based on their books. We want to know their favorite song, the worst writing advice they've ever received, and you better believe we want to know their brunch order.
It's time to stop asking writers the same boring questions and start getting REAL.
Anna Dorn is the author of Perfume & Pain, Exalted, and Vagablonde. She lives in Los Angeles.
Favorite Bookstore: It’s too hard to pick just one! Kramer’s in DC, where I grew up. Stories and Skylight in LA where I live now.
Favorite recent read: Also can’t just pick one. Banal Nightmare by Halle Butler, Anyone’s Ghost by August Thomson, and Trust & Safety by Laura Blackett and Eve Gleichman.
Best Spring Purchase or Favorite Spring Trend: I decided to start wearing bras again because I’m too old to be flagrantly parading my nipples the way I have been. So I bought a few new bras designed for small-breasted women like me and most models. I also bought these things called “nippies,” which I love.
Worst Writing Advice: “Read everything.” Sometimes I think reading too much can influence your style and/or be paralyzingly intimidating.
Best Writing Advice: EL Doctorow said: “Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”
Favorite Poem: My girlfriend’s book-length poem a women.
Brunch Order: I pretty much only consume coffee before 2 pm.
O I love this interview... so Ronna Barrett and the best writing advice EL Doctrow quote is spot on.
