Welcome! A cute lil springboard for writers, The Jumpoff will be serving up bi-weekly creative prompts to get you out of your head and onto the page.
To “jump off” means “to set off quickly, usually with success; a point of departure.” And that’s what we’re doing here, folks—we’re dolling out exercises to jolt your brain, jog your memory, spur inspiration, stimulate that genius wit of yours, cue the masterpiece!
Whether you’re writing fiction, poetry, nonfiction…what even is genre anyway? Who cares! The Jumpoff doesn’t, and you shouldn’t either…so whatever the prompt is giving, feel free to take and interpret on your own terms. Jump in…the water’s fine!
PROMPT
We are going to be basic and talk about Gratitude! In all seriousness, this time of year can be challenging, even if you get along with your family and your loved ones aren’t currently driving you insane. The holidays are hard, but despite our trials, we all have a lot to be grateful for.
Write a rapid-fire list of 24 (because we are closing out 2024!) things you are grateful for. Choose 1 (or more) from your gratitude list and free-write a scene, a poem, dialogue– whatever comes to mind.
Calling All Writer-Mothers: Claim Your Creative Space!
Motherhood is filled with contradictions—tedium and tenderness, rage and devotion, monotony and mystery. Writing about it is complex, and finding the time to write feels even harder.
